Email (rant) to RideDCC regarding its ridiculous fundraising requirements...

Yeah, you knew it was coming.  Didn't take long, huh?  I couldn't help myself.  Here ya go...

To Whom It May Concern,

I was very interested in the Dolphins Cycling Challenge.  As a member of a local cycling club and cycling blogger, I am looking forward to my first full century and thought I would do it at your event.  However, upon going to your registration page and seeing the costs involved, I can not participate.  I am not talking about the $150 entry fee.  I am more than willing to pay that cost.  I am referring to the minimum $1,000 fundraising for the century ride.  I am blown away by this amount.  I did a metric century ride a few months ago and raised more than $400.  Considering the current economic conditions in our country, I was pretty happy with that.  What is personally frustrating is that my father received medical services from the UM Cancer Center and I would like to participate to help raise awareness for this facility and the work done there.  However, the price of fundraising is way too steep for me, my family and friends.  I am disappointed that I will not participate in this event.  I am not writing to ask for anything.  Rather, I want you to understand that the nature of this type of fundraising requirement excludes many cyclists from being a part of your cause.  And I think that's a shame.

Dolphins Cycling Challenge - Are You Kidding Me?!!

I am highly offended.

I mean, I'm *really* pissed off!

Someone at work gave the hubby a flyer for the Dolphins Cycling Challenge.  It sounded great!

November 5 & 6th, 2011.
And I quote...
"1 or 2 day Tri-County Rides that will include Miami Dolphins Alumni and Community Leaders.  100% of Proceeds go to UM Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, about $500k was raised the first year!  Finish Through the Tunnel onto the Field at Sun Life Stadium like the Dolphins do on Gameday!  Receive an Official Dolphins Bike Jersey and more!"

The hubby and I are getting really excited.  I mean, this event sounds awesome!  Of course, we love our Dolphins.  And, to make it even more special, my father has received treatment at the UM Sylvester Cancer Center.  We were already like, where do we sign up?!!

We went to the website listed, www.RideDCC.com.  We found out registration is $150.  My hubby balked, but I still thought this would be really special and I was all jacked up.  You get a jersey and some other stuff, get to ride through the tunnel into the stadium, and it benefits a really good cause that has already helped my family.  To make it even more appealing, the event is on a Saturday and Sunday, with the century ride held on Saturday which is already my day off from work.  My head was spinning at how freaking exciting this event would be as my first full century ride!

Then, we read a little bit further.  And that's when my excitement turned to disappointment and disgust.  In order to participate in the century ride you must raise a MINIMUM OF $1,000 IN FUNDRAISING.  Yes, you read that right.  Apparently, at some point they take your credit card information and if you don't raise the entire grand, they charge it to your plastic.

ARE YOU SHITTING ME?!!

Is this the kind of "elitist" cycling stuff that I keep hearing about?!!  I've got an idea!  If you keep the fundraising to a lower yet respectable amount, say $250 or even $300 like another event that I've done, then you'll get more people involved!  Instead of a few upper crust cyclists who can find ways to raise $1,000 or can just afford to shell it out themselves, you'll get MORE people which will add up to MORE fundraising!  But, since you're not doing that, oh snobby RideDCC.com folks... you can kiss my chamoised ass and I'll ride my first century elsewhere.  :-P

2nd club ride...

Did my second club ride with the BRBC this morning.  I rode with the D and under crowd (<15 mph) for two reasons.  First, because I got dropped by the C (16-18 mph) group last week.  And second, because I felt like I needed to build my confidence (and legs) back up after getting dropped, falling, and getting bruised on both arms and one leg.  Plus, I'm *still* getting used to the new-ish bike and clipless pedals.  There was actually a method to my madness because my plan worked out well.  We did almost 22 miles at what was a leisurely pace for me.  It was easy and the bike felt good.  I got over some lingering fears of the whole stopping-unclipping-falling over situation.  I also hooked up with one of the hubby's co-workers and it was nice to have some conversation along the way.  Overall, it was a nice ride and I feel good.  And next week, I'll step back up to the C crowd again.
;-D

CatEye & Flat Lesson...

Nothing like killing two birds with one stone!  Hit my fave LBS to get the flat fixed and the hubby and I got a quick tutorial, so now we should be able to handle that ourselves.  No pressure!  LOL!  While there, I had them put the double wireless CatEye cyclocomputer on the bike.  Made sense to me, despite whatever the bank account says!

So now I can say, my bike is fully decked out the way I wanted.  The hubby's, on the other hand, is still on layaway.  And he's getting antsy.  In my defense, let me remind you that he's the *runner* and just did another 5K this past week.  I'm the biker!  Anyway, we'll throw some bucks toward his bike and make sure he has it soon!

Flat & in denial...

Two days ago, bike was parked in the living room, as usual.  But, I noticed something different... off... wrong!  I went over to inspect.  Flat tire.  The back one.  In all honesty, I have been very busy the past two days.  I really have.  But, I'm also a bit in denial and scared to mess with it.  Since I *need* to ride and I also *need* to learn how to fix my own flats, I guess the time is coming to deal with it.  Soon, very soon.  Profanity filled updates will probably follow...
